SkyCity Entertainment Group announced on September 1, 2026, that it has completed the sale of its Auckland properties. The sale aligns with the company’s ongoing asset monetization program.
SkyCity’s Efforts to Generate Cash and Reduce Its Debt Continue
In its announcement, SkyCity confirmed the previously announced sale of the 99 Albert Street office building , as well as its investment properties on Victoria Street . The transaction was first announced on July 17, 2026, and is part of SkyCity Entertainment group’s effort to raise its cash reserves and reduce its debt.
The sale sees SkyCity Entertainment sell the aforementioned properties to Mainland Capital, in a joint venture with Russel Property Group. The transaction nets the gaming company some NZD 74.5 million ($44 million).
As mentioned, the sale is part of SkyCity Entertainment’s attempt to bolster its cash reserves and pay its debt. To that end, the company is also planning to sell its Grand Hotel for up to NZD 300 million ($177 million). That deal, however, exists only as a non-binding agreement with an unnamed overseas buyer and is not guaranteed to materialize. If it does, the extra funds will allow SkyCity to further reduce its debt.
SkyCity Rejected Two Takeover Bills
In other news, SkyCity Entertainment just responded to media speculation about a potential takeover of the company. In its release, the company confirmed that it had received two such offers – one by Oaktree Capital Management and one by an unspecified party. The first agreement offered NZD 0.70 per SkyCity share, while the other offered NZD 0.75 per share.
Additionally, both proposals were subject to numerous conditions, including a period of at least eight weeks of due diligence and arranging debt financing. SkyCity added that the proposals were also subject to multiple other conditions, including regulatory and shareholder approvals, among other things.
In the end, SkyCity concluded that its board unanimously determined that neither proposal adequately reflected SkyCity’s underlying value and that some of the conditions were “problematic.”
While SkyCity said that it would be open to considering a revised proposal, no such proposal was submitted.
In June, SkyCity Entertainment was required to pay almost $15 million in relation to compliance violations at its casino in Adelaide, Australia.
